Background of the Study
The rise of digital communication, particularly through SMS, has led to notable changes in syntactic patterns. In Nigeria, where mobile phone usage is ubiquitous, SMS language often reflects simplification processes that deviate from standard written forms. Users tend to condense information using abbreviated phrases, omitting function words and simplifying sentence structures to achieve rapid communication (Olu, 2023). This phenomenon results from practical constraints, such as character limits and the need for quick exchanges, as well as the influence of informal conversational norms. The study examines syntactic simplification by analyzing a corpus of SMS messages from diverse Nigerian demographics. It explores how these simplified structures affect clarity and whether they are evolving into a new register of digital discourse. Recent research indicates that such linguistic innovations can have both positive and negative implications for literacy and language development (Afolabi, 2024). By comparing SMS language with formal written standards, the study aims to provide insights into the balance between efficiency and clarity in digital communication.

Statement of the Problem
Although SMS language is a pervasive aspect of digital communication in Nigeria, its syntactic simplification remains underexplored. There is a gap in the literature regarding the specific ways in which sentence structures are modified in text messages, and how these modifications impact overall communication effectiveness. This lack of systematic investigation limits our understanding of potential long-term effects on language proficiency and literacy. Addressing this issue is essential for educators and policymakers who need to adapt teaching strategies to incorporate digital language trends (Olu, 2023; Afolabi, 2024).

Objectives of the Study

  1. To identify and analyze patterns of syntactic simplification in Nigerian SMS language.

  2. To evaluate the impact of these simplifications on message clarity.

  3. To compare SMS syntactic structures with standard written language.

Research Questions

  1. What syntactic simplifications are most common in Nigerian SMS language?

  2. How do these simplifications affect clarity and understanding?

  3. How does SMS language differ from conventional written communication?

Significance of the Study
This study enhances our understanding of digital language evolution by examining syntactic simplification in SMS communication. The findings will benefit linguists, educators, and technology developers by informing strategies to bridge the gap between informal digital communication and formal language standards (Olu, 2023).

Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study is limited to the analysis of SMS language in Nigeria and does not include other forms of digital communication.

Definitions of Terms

  1. Syntactic Simplification: The reduction of sentence complexity.

  2. SMS Language: Informal language used in text messaging.

  3. Digital Communication: Exchange of information via electronic devices.
